I read today that Eurosport is losing the rights to show Motogp in Europe from the end of this season. Apparently DORNA have stated that they want Motogp to be shown on freeview terrestial television in each country rather than on payment satellite/cable channels.
I think thats a real shame as Eurosport always produced a really comprehensive package for each race with live practice, qualfiying and the race itself followed by muliple repeat highlights in the following week. I will sure miss the excellent commentary team of Julian Ryder, Toby Moody and Randy Mamola- those three guys are the like the walking Encyclopedia Brittanica of racing- I wonder what they will do next year, WSB maybe if Eurosport keep that?
For UK motogp fans this could mean even more disappointing news. The BBC are already committed to showing Formula 1 from next year so you can bet that, if they get the Motogp rights, then when it comes to Motogp races which conflict with Formula 1 races it will be us Motogp fans who lose out. For non-UK based people the Formula 1 coverage in the UK is soon to be renamed the "Lewis Hamilton Show" - Fans who have gotten into F1 in the last couple of years may be unaware that other drivers exist! :-P
Of course what would be interesting would be if ITV (another terestrial tv channel) picked up the Motogp coverage along with the services of Messrs Moody, Ryder and Mamola but somehow I don't see that happening.
